The term “hernia” refers to any internal tissues or organs that bulge out from the cavities where these structures typically reside. They occur at weak spots in the surrounding muscles and connective tissues. There are many different types of hernias; however, the inguinal hernia accounts for 75% of all such protrusions.
North Adelaide, South Australia, colorectal and general surgeon, Dr Shanthan Ganesh can discuss your options for repair of inguinal hernias that affect the inner groin, as well as other types of hernia. These conditions do not resolve themselves spontaneously.
To provide lasting relief from symptoms such as pain, pressure, numbness, constipation, and nausea, surgical intervention is generally advised. Hernia repair can also prevent complications, such as strangulation. This medical emergency arises when the intestine slips through the hernia sac and becomes trapped or strangulated, cutting off the blood supply.
Any time the muscles and surrounding tissue (fascia) may be weakened, hernias can develop. Risk factors include:
In addition to “acquired” hernias that develop over time due to the above and other contributing factors, hernias can be congenital or present at birth. Inguinal hernias are 8 to 10 times more common among men. They may appear as a bulge in the groin, scrotum, or abdominal region. The bulge may be more noticeable when coughing or straining.
We may initially take a “wait and see approach,” depending on the frequency and severity of symptoms, as well as the risk of strangulation. Within two and five years, 25% and 50% of men, respectively, needed surgery due to increased pain when exercising and worsening constipation and urinary problems.
The open method involves making an incision near the site. The bulging tissue is then pushed back into the abdomen via this opening. The hernia is repaired with mesh to close the muscle and reduce the risk of recurrence. Once the hernia is repaired, the surgical site is closed.
The laparoscopic method involves making tiny openings in the abdomen. The procedure is performed from the inside, and by using small ports or hollow tubes that are introduced through the incisions. Special instruments are then inserted through these ports. We use such instruments to perform the actual repair or closure of the muscle. Here, too, we use mesh to perform the repair. The site is then closed with sutures.
Minimally-invasive procedures, like laparoscopy, are generally associated with less risk of pain and complications post-treatment, as well as a faster recovery and shorter downtime. There is no single method that is universally appropriate. So, it is essential for Dr Ganesh to conduct a thorough evaluation and recommend those techniques that are in the best long-term interests of your health.
Regardless of the type of surgery recommended, our team in North Adelaide, South Australia, will review everything to expect before, during, and after treatment. There are considerations and limitations associated with diet, physical activity, and heavy lifting.
