As a colorectal and general surgeon, Dr Shanthan Ganesh provides trusted specialty care for various conditions affecting your overall quality of life, including an inguinal hernia. This type of hernia is associated with a range of life-altering symptoms as well as potentially serious complications. So, it is important to promptly seek out hernia repair and evaluation at our office in North Adelaide, South Australia.
IH is a type of groin hernia. It occurs when the intestine bulges through the opening in the muscle in the groin area or scrotum. This type of groin hernia is more common among men and accounts for three-fourths of all hernias.
Men are eight to ten times more likely to develop this condition. Other risk factors include the loss of muscle tone that accompanies the aging process, obesity (which can put excess force on the abdominal muscles), chronic straining, sudden twisting or pulling, connective tissue disorders, and a family history of inguinal hernia. Hernias may also be present at birth or acquired over time.
Hernias do not get better or go away on their own. They only get larger and eventually require treatment. Our range of treatment options eases persistent symptoms of pain, pressure, irritation, and numbness. It also prevents complications such as a strangulated hernia. This complication occurs when the blood supply to the intestine is compromised by this organ being trapped in the hernia pouch, and emergency surgery is required. Vomiting and severe, acute abdominal pain may be signs that the intestine has passed through the hernia sac.
Surgical procedures include “open” hernia repair, whereby the muscle is either closed with sutures or resolved with mesh through an incision or opening made near the site. When repaired with mesh, this procedure is called hernioplasty. As specialists, we are adept at advanced, minimally invasive procedures like laparoscopic herniorrhaphy. This alternative involves correcting the hernia through several small openings in the abdomen. Generally, less invasive procedures are associated with minimal side effects, complications, and recovery risks. Nonsurgical interventions, exercises and physical therapy can help manage symptoms. And, for those who have not experienced any symptoms, we can take the “watchful waiting” approach at least for a time.
Of course, Dr Shanthan Ganesh’s office will review specific expectations and after-care with you before your surgery. These instructions and guidance will be based on factors such as the type of hernia to be treated and the complexity of the surgery. In general, light activity is perfectly safe the day after your procedure. Take it easy, though. You can gradually increase your activity as your body heals. If your job or other activities require lifting and are more strenuous, you may need to wait a few weeks. But do not wait to reach out to us if you are concerned about unexplained abdominal pain or other possible symptoms. Our office in North Adelaide, SA, can be reached at 08 81646727 today.
