As a colorectal and general surgeon, Dr. Shanthan Ganesh has the advanced knowledge and capabilities to accurately diagnose and effectively treat a wide range of conditions. Our expertise extends to perianal abscess and haemorrhoid treatment.
Below are four facts to know about these conditions and our approaches to treating them:
Perianal abscesses are boil-like, pus-filled lumps found near the anus, rectum, or the space between the genitals and anus (perineal area). These abscesses are caused by bacteria. When bacteria get trapped and infect the anal glands, abscesses form. Symptoms include pus-like discharge, pain, red, swollen nodules, painful bowel movements, rectal bleeding, and constipation.
Haemorrhoids are commonly referred to as the “varicose veins” of the anal canal, because they are swollen blood vessels covered by a thin, mucous membrane. Most of the time, they originate internally and are not visible. Without treatment, and as they grow, the haemorrhoid may bulge into the anal canal and protrude (prolapse) through the opening of the anus. Any time the supportive tissues of the anal canal are weakened, haemorrhoids may follow. Risk factors include ageing, chronic constipation and diarrhoea, pregnancy, and straining. Common symptoms include bleeding, lumps, discomfort, and itching.
Surgery most often involves draining the abscess. As a specialist, Dr. Ganesh is very familiar with treating abscesses and other similar conditions (such as fistulas, which can result from a past or current abscess). This simple procedure involves making an opening or incision in the skin near the anus. The abscess is drained surgically. We may perform this treatment with either local anesthesia or under general anesthesia. Antibiotic therapy on its own is insufficient to treat either abscesses or fistulas. Antibiotics are generally prescribed and taken afterward to stop the infection in patients with weakened immune systems.
Mild haemorrhoids and symptoms may be relieved with changes to your diet and other lifestyle modifications. Dr. Ganesh may recommend increasing your intake of fiber and fluids. It may be advised to alter straining and other bowel habits that contribute to this disease. Bleeding from smaller haemorrhoids may be stopped with injections. Dr. Ganesh also performs procedures such as rubber band ligation to decrease the size of internal haemorrhoids and to slow the rate of bleeding. This procedure may be combined with injections. Surgical excision or removal is largely appropriate for very large and complex haemorrhoids.
All treatments start with an accurate understanding of the source of any concerning and/or persistent symptoms. We encourage you to contact the office to discuss any concerns that you may have and to schedule an appointment. To speak with a member of our team, call 08 81646727 today.
