A colectomy or colon resection is the surgical process of removing a part or all of the colon. Major bowel resection may require more than one consultation session. We encourage patients to attend with family members or a friend to allow for a better understanding of the procedure. Sometimes, the diagnosis of surgery can be stressful and having a support member allows for a better understanding of the procedure, management and recovery.

Depending on the patient’s medical illnesses, they may need to have an echocardiogram or pulmonary function test to assess the suitability for surgery. In some cases, the patient may also need to see an anaesthetist prior to the surgery.

Dr Ganesh is a firm believer in ‘Prehab’ for major bowel surgery. This involves a series of interventions to optimise the medical, physical and mental aspects of the patient prior to surgery.
